Community Salons was founded by Jamie. Born in Victoria and raised in Vancouver's West End, Jamie has lived in the Cook Street area for the last seven years. Jamie created Community Salons in order to ground the industry with the values he embraces and to make it work for all of us.
Jamie is passionate about all things community, from housing to food security to the overdose crises to mental health, always asking what he can do to fill the gaps. To advocate, to ask questions.
Jamie is dedicated to the wellness of each and every person who walks through our door. He opened this salon to be a caring, communicative, welcoming space for people of all ages and backgrounds, no matter their economic position.
He began cutting hair in 1997 and continued to learn and study the craft himself, as well as train at New York's Bumble and Bumble University, at Toronto's esteemed Vidal Sassoon Academy, and the Vancouver Hair Academy.
When Jamie isn't honing his hair-skills, you can find him on his bicycle, on the basketball court, hanging with his partner, daughter and now grandchildren or doing some work within his community. Your Community.
He values continuous learning and spends his spare time attending virtual classes and conferences or spends time riding his bike, playing basketball and spending time family.

A salon based near downtown Victoria hopes to continue being a vital part of the local community by providing for free haircuts to those living in poverty and in difficult financial circumstances.........
..........After more than 20 years of cutting hair, Jamie McCallum opened Community Salons in 2021, pioneering a new business model with the goal of providing free haircuts to those who can’t afford a standard haircut.
Nowadays, he tries to fit around three free haircuts every week – depending on his schedule – for those who ask.........
..........Currently, McCallum is in the process of creating an affordable, online hair-styling course and he also hopes to work with other stylists to teach styling in the city at an affordable price due to the high prices of established barber and stylist schools.
